MMORPG

MMORPG

MMORPG, which stands for Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game, is a type of computer role-playing game in which large numbers of players interact with one another in a virtual world. Each player in an MMORPG controls an avatar which performs tasks, acquires items and interacts with other players. The number of players and the persistent world of MMORPGs, which continues to exist and evolve while the player is away from the game, differentiate these games from single-player and multi-player computer role-playing games.

Generally, MMORPGs are based on traditional fantasy themes and feature some form of character progression by earning experience points and reaching certain character levels. MMORPGs also allow players to communicate with each other and most are deployed using a client-server system architecture.

One of the most popular MMORPGs is World of Warcraft. World of Warcraft had about 9 million active subscribers worldwide as of July 2007. Other MMORPGs are listed below.
